On father's day 2023, I was able to meet Mark Tedin and get this card signed on the case.
Grading
Overall 9.5 GEM MINT
Centering 9.5
Corners 9.5
Edges 9
Surface 9.5
Reference this fantastic alpha population report table from Joel Mick.
This particular copy only struggles from a minor edge flaw on the front left of the card, which fairly grades as a 9 sub grade.
Rarity & Collectability
Timetwister is quite a special card to have in Gem Mint condition. With only 16 copies in BGS 9.5 and 1 copy in BGS 10, this card is relatively low population given it’s demand. This card suffered from left right centering issues resulting in lower graded Gem Mint copies.
With the advent of EDH being the most popular play style and this being the only card of the power 9 that is legal to play in that format, the demand for playable copies of this card have really exploded.
I used to think that Timetwister was relevant only because of her 8 other hot friends, this couldn’t be further from the truth now, and has increased in value only second to the Black Lotus in cards for play (unlimited, etc.).
Impressions & Artwork
Mark Tedin's art is amazing and I love how sometimes it is ungainly but hard to turn your eye away from at the same time (ie Chaos Orb). In Timetwister, Mark paints a red twister style hour glass that presumably rewinds the clock on a warrior with a shield, casted by a wizard with some nasty looking paws. I do love the art, and appreciate the colors that he used. I wonder what was going through his head when painting Timetwister and Chaos Orb?
Usage & Gameplay
This card is quite powerful, if unassuming. It allows you to draw seven new cards allowing potential card advantage against your opponent if timed correctly, but more importantly allows some infinite combos that allow protection against mill decks and allows cards that are used as fast resources like Black Lotus to be reused multiple times within the same game.
Nostalgia
I wish I had a good memory here but the truth is I didn’t know anyone cool enough to own a Timetwister when I was a kid. Even if I did, I probably wasn’t smart enough to realize why this card is so powerful anyway.
