Mahamoti Djinn [Alpha Pop 5]

Grading

Overall       BGS 9.5 GEM MINT

This particular copy is graded a BGS 9.5b+ with the 9 subgrade on corners.

Rarity & Collectability

While slightly less sought after than some other cards, Mahamoti Djinn is an incredibly low population card in Alpha BGS 9.5 with only 5 copies graded a 9.5.  Of the 5 copies, 3 are in quad subgrades and above.  A combination of centering issues and high playability resulted in this card being so rare to see graded in this high of overall score.

Impressions & Artwork

Dan Frazier's art of a flying Djinn coming out of a lamp is very reminiscent of Disney's Aladdin.  It's hard to imagine that Aladdin having come out in 1992 a year before Alpha didn't influence Dan's paintbrush here.

Usage & Gameplay

A 5/6 creature was nothing short of a flying tank in this golden era of the game.  Enough toughness to stop a Juzam or base model Shiva cold in its tracks was nothing to scoff at, especially for blue's early color identity that struggled with big creatures that didn't have prohibitive casting costs or drawbacks.  Many blue decks would feature Mahamoti as a big-boy closer and it's easy to see why.
